Grandaddy - Hewlett’s Daughter (Live on some British show I think in 2001)
This was them on the upswing in a good high point where they were really big overseas. And I think this shows why. There’s a kind of subtle and simple brilliance to their music that few can catch due to everyone wanting music to be demanding and get in your face more. But the lyrics and the way they’re poured out so hauntingly over machines that seem like dusty old 80’s casio relics. The emotion I feel when I hear this song is similar to a ghostly chant.
Sadly they did just that 6 years later. But good things can’t last forever, they say. I hadn’t seen this in a while so it was interesting to see it again. It’s music in a dark cave and it sounds as if a person is swimming in an electronic sea and needs help getting out or their sure to drown.
